About the Condition

Metatarsalgia literally means "painful metatarsals". There are many causes of metatarsalgia and careful assesmnent is required to ensure the correct diagnosis is reached.

Causes of Metatarsalgia

One of the most common causes of metatarsalgia is a loss of the fat pad to the under surface of the foot. This is referred to as fat pad atrophy. Imagine how it might feel walking around all day on hard concrete surfaces compared with say a soft carpeted surface. When you loose the fat pad in the foot you have less cushioning.
