About the Condition

Heel pain is common and will affected about 1 in 10 people throughout their lives. Symptoms vary from periods of mild discomfort to severe pain and disability which can last several months or years.

Causes of Plantar Fasciitis (Heel Pain)

There are many causes of heel pain, although the condition "plantar fasciitis" is by far the most common. Potential causes of heel pain include:

• Loss of heel pad
• Plantar fasciitis
• Heel bone fracture
• Nerve entrapment
• Tumours
• Vascular problems
• Injury





Making the Diagnosis

Very often a careful history will point to the correct diagnosis which may then be confirmed by careful clinical examination. However, in certain circumstances additional tests may be required such as:

• X-rays
• MRI
• Bone scans
