About the Condition

In-growing Toenail An ingrowing toenail develops when a portion of the nail edge cuts into the flesh of the toe leading to pain and swelling around the nail fold. Your big toe is most likely to be affected, either on one or sometimes both sides. Your toenail curves and cuts into your skin causing your toe to be tender, especially when you walk on it.
Left untreated, the inflammation can spread to the rest of the toe leading to infection and drainage of pus from the area.

Causes of Ingrowing toe nails

There are many causes of in-growing toenails. These include:
•Shape of the nail plate
•Trauma
•Poor nail cutting technique
•Ill fitting shoes
•Involuted nails

Making the Diagnosis

In-growing Toenail Initially the toe may simply feel sore around the nail fold. As the problem worsens however inflammation may develop and the area becomes red and swollen. Infection can develop very quickly leading to oozing and pus.
